MUNUPI ARTS CENTRE PIRLANGIMPI MELVILLE ISLAND, NORTHERN TERRITORY
Contract value: $1.1 million
Completion: 2020
Client: Munupi Arts & Crafts Association
Type of project: Arts facilities – Construct only
Located along Melville Island’s north-western coastline at Pirlangimpi, the Munupi Arts Centre is an important meeting place for the Tiwi people of the Pirlangimpi community. MRN was engaged by the architect firm Kaunitz Yeung Architecture for the project, which included demolition, renovation and construction of a new building to the architect’s specifications. In addition, concrete flooring modules were barged to the island, and we installed service connections. The result was a new workshop with a covered verandah to suit the sweltering climate and a renovated gallery studio, which celebrates Tiwi culture.
